After graduating from Stellenbosch University, Vaughan began his career in private equity. He subsequently joined a local ratings agency gaining extensive corporate and insurance institution credit experience within South Africa as well as in other emerging markets. In 2007 he joined Lombard Insurance Group as a Portfolio Manager, primarily involved in a number of strategic acquisitions for the group. In 2010, Vaughan co-founded the Fulcrum Group and currently serves as the Group’s Chief Executive Officer.
Bain is the Fulcrum Group’s executive chairman. A chartered
accountant, Ian spent some years in the freight and financial
services industries before joining PFV (now Alexander Forbes) in 1981
as its financial director. Ian has also held a number of senior
positions in the insurance industry, latterly as CEO of the Allianz
Insurance Group. Instrumental in setting up a premium finance
business for Glenrand MIB Group in 2002, Ian facilitated the
acquisition of this business by Lombard Group in 2010, laying the
foundation for the Fulcrum Group of today.
Lill has since 2012 been the Fulcrum Group’s chief financial
officer. Gavin began his career as an auditing article clerk in 2006;
after qualifying as a chartered accountant he served as an audit
manager at BDO for nearly three years, before joining Premium
Financing Solutions in 2011 as its financial manager. As CFO, Gavin
is responsible for all the finance functions in the funding,
collections and treasury businesses within the Fulcrum Group.
Peter Gordon entered the insurance industry in 1994, having completed his Bachelor of Commerce (Economics) degree. He joined PFV (later Alexander Forbes) and spent 11 years with the group; for six of these years Peter was based in London, focusing on the UK and European markets. During this time he obtained his MSc Finance from London Business School. He returned to South Africa in 2004 to join North Road Consulting, a boutique management consultancy specialising in strategy and operational turnaround, before joining the Lombard Insurance Company in 2007, as head of Partnerships and member of Lombard’s executive committee. In January 2015 he joined the Fulcrum Group to build and manage Fulcrum Capital, an independent provider of equity capital and loan funding to the insurance intermediary market. Peter is an authorised representative and key individual in terms of South African Financial Services Board regulations. Peter is currently the Executive Head Strategic Development at Fulcrum.
Fulcrum Group’s head of Brand, Clodagh Da Paixao started her
marketing career over 20 years ago, holding various positions with
international cosmetic houses, the most recent being the Estée
Lauder Group of Companies. Clodagh entered the insurance world in
2013, when she joined the Brand team at Etana Insurance. Following
the acquisition of Etana by Hollard Insurance, she was then the
marketing manager for the Hollard Broker Markets division. Clodagh
joined the Fulcrum Group in January 2016, and has most notably been
responsible for the brand’s refreshed corporate identity.
Michelle Pedra is the Fulcrum Groups Executive Head Legal & Compliance, a discipline in which she is an insurance industry leader. Prior to joining Fulcrum, she headed up compliance at Mutual & Federal for eight years, and at the Regent Group for a further six years. While at CGU she led the company’s legal centre, with a national team of 50 staff, later joining the Legal team at Mutual & Federal when it acquired CGU. When companies were compelled by law in 2000 to appoint compliance officers, Michelle started the Compliance department at Mutual & Federal – and she has played her part in developing the discipline ever since, including chairing the SAIA Legal & Compliance committee for several years. Her particular area of interest is in crafting creative compliance solutions that meet both regulatory and business requirements.
Barry Scott has had a varied career to date. An electrical engineering graduate of the University of Natal, specialising in information technology, Barry spent 10 years as a chemical plant engineer with AECI Group. Thereafter, he spent five years as CEO of an IT company, specialising in solution design for customers, and system implementation. He then joined the South African Insurance Association as its CEO, a position he held for 20 years. During this time he also served in numerous positions, including as managing director of the Intermediaries Guarantee Facility (IGF); chairman of the South African Pool for the Insurance of Nuclear Risks and of the South African Pool Administrators (a Lloyd’s coverholder), and also as international Nuclear Pools reviewing chairman; Board member of IGF, Business Against Crime, the Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority (Inseta), the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA), STRIDE and the Policy Board for Financial Services (advisory council to the Minister of Finance); the Ombudsman for Short-term Insurance; as well as on the Financial Sector Charter Council, South African Insurance Crime Bureau and Business Unity South Africa. Barry joined Fulcrum in November 2014 as its chief operating officer, and is currently Executive Head of Fulcrum Delta and Special Projects. He is also a non-executive director of the Conduit Capital Group, Inseta and IISA, and is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Directors of South Africa (F.Inst.D).
head of Fulcrum Treasury, Danie Berrange started his investment
career in 1988 as a money market dealer, before spending some time as
an equity trader on the JSE. After 12 years in portfolio management
for the short-term insurance industry, he co-founded Huysamer Capital
Investments, an asset management venture. In 2002 he accepted the
company’s CEO position. Danie joined the Fulcrum Group in January
Devan Kerr joined the Fulcrum Group in 2013, as a transactor in the Specialised Lending division, having previously held various corporate finance positions. Since joining Fulcrum Devan has been involved in many facets of the group’s business including heading up Fulcrum’s Premium Finance division, and is currently Executive Head Business and Market Development.
Paul Schreuder brings over 20 years of local and international IT experience across a broad range of environments – including SAP, software development, BI, project management and IT management – to bear in his capacity as the Fulcrum Group’s chief information officer, a post he took up in May 2015. After graduating with a Masters degree (MSc) in 1996, Paul spent nearly eight years consulting in the UK and Europe before returning to South Africa. He has a proven record of successfully delivering large-scale and multinational projects within budget and time requirements.
