Fulcrum continues to support the Insurance Institute of Gauteng’s educational programmes, and this year we are proud to have our team involved in the Roots and Wings Programme. We caught up with Mamakgatho Phaswane, Assistant Accountant at Fulcrum, in our Q and A series to learn more about her journey as a mentee.
FULCRUM: Tell us a bit about yourself and your current role.
MAMAKGATHO: I hold a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting Degree and a one-year Management Advanced Programme (MAP) certificate from Wits Business School. I am currently working as an Assistant Accountant, where I’ve gained valuable experience in finance and built a strong foundation in the field.
Beyond the numbers, I’m passionate about continuous learning, building meaningful relationships, and striving to become the best version of myself both personally and professionally. I thrive in environments that challenge me to grow, and I am intentional about showing up, contributing, and making a positive impact.
Outside of work, I’m a hiker at heart who loves nature and climbing mountains, it’s my way of recharging and finding perspective.
FULCRUM: Why did you decide to join the Roots & Wings programme?
MAMAKGATHO: Towards the end of 2025, I felt a strong push to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself with something unfamiliar, even a little intimidating. I knew I was seeking growth, but I wasn’t entirely sure which direction to take.
When I came across the Roots & Wings programme, I spoke to colleagues and mentors who had been part of it. Their insights showed me how impactful the programme could be, and it felt like the right fit for where I am in my journey.
I wanted to deepen my understanding of the insurance industry and gain meaningful guidance as I navigate my career path. Being part of a programme that invests in young professionals and creates space for mentorship and connection truly aligns with my personal and professional goals.
FULCRUM: What are you most excited to learn or experience during this programme?
MAMAKGATHO: I believe in the power of meaningful conversations, and I see this programme as a space where dialogue can truly shape and elevate my thinking. I’m eager to engage with people who bring diverse perspectives and experiences, learning in ways that go beyond theory.
I’m particularly excited to gain real industry insights and learn from my mentor’s journey, while continuing to strengthen both my technical expertise and interpersonal skills. Building connections with fellow mentees and mentors, and being part of a community rooted in growth, collaboration, and shared learning, is something I value deeply.
Most importantly, this experience represents a personal commitment to stepping out of my comfort zone. I want to challenge myself, build confidence in how I show up, and become more intentional in the way I connect, communicate, and contribute.
FULCRUM: How do you hope this programme will support your professional growth?
MAMAKGATHO: I believe this programme will help me gain clarity on my career path and the direction I want to pursue within the industry. It offers an opportunity to be more intentional about my growth and to better understand where my strengths and potential truly lie.
Through mentorship, I look forward to learning from real experiences and practical insights that go beyond theory. This guidance will not only strengthen my confidence but also equip me with the tools, knowledge, and mindset needed to navigate the industry more effectively.
Ultimately, I see this programme as a stepping stone toward future opportunities, empowering me to grow into a more confident, capable, and well-rounded professional.
FULCRUM: What are you hoping to achieve by the end of the programme?
MAMAKGATHO: By the end of the programme, I hope to have grown both personally and professionally, with a clearer sense of direction and purpose in my career. I aim to gain valuable industry insights and develop skills that will enable me to contribute more confidently and effectively in my role.
I also hope to build meaningful, lasting relationships with my mentor and fellow mentees, connections that will continue to inspire and support my journey beyond the programme.
Most importantly, I want to walk away with greater confidence in myself, stronger self-awareness, and the ability to take on new opportunities with intention and clarity.
